Caring For Perennials
1. Daylily Care and Planting Instructions
Caring for daylilies is very easy. Once your daylilies arrive, you will want to unpack the daylilies and soak them in a bucket of water for one HOUR, this will insure the roots have plenty of water to start growing. Do not soak too long, this may cause the plants to rot.
If the daylilies are not cut back when they arrive, you will want to cut the foliage back to 6" or less, prior to planting. Plant the daylilies by spreading the roots flat and placing them in a hole 3" to 6” deep. Make sure there is plenty of loose soil below and around the roots. Tamp the ground around the plant down firmly after planting. Water thoroughly.
Space plants no closer than 2 feet apart. Daylilies will multiply very quickly, they generally double or triple in the number of plants each year. Once your daylily is in the ground for 3-5 years it can be divided. Dividing plants is not necessary but it does improve blooming performance. This is accomplished by digging the entire clump up and placing it on its side and splitting individual plants off with a shovel or by hand (soaking the clump in water may help with the splitting up process.)
Although daylilies will perform well in drought conditions, daylilies perform at their best when planted in partial to full sun with plenty of water. A general garden fertilizer works well for daylilies.
Very Important – Water your daylilies during any period of dry weather during the first year (any period of 7 days or more without rain)
As with most perennial plants, daylilies will perform better the second year after planting.
2. Ornamental Grass, Hosta, Beebalm, and Other Perennials Care and Planting Instructions
Most perennials are shipped as bare root plants. Most of the dirt is washed off the plants and the foliage is intentionally cut back to just above the roots.
All perennials should be planted immediately. If this is not possible, keep plants cool and damp and plant within a few days.
Beebalms, Ornamental Grass, Hosta, and other Perennials
1. Dig a hole twice the size of the roots in width and depth.
2. Fill half of the hole with loose soil. A good topsoil or decayed compost works well. The more organic matter in the soil, the better the plant will perform.
3. Place plant in hole and fill with loose dirt. Crown of plant should be at the soil level. Tamp soil down.

3. Oriental and Asiatic Lily Bulbs Planting Instructions
1. Dig a hole approximately 8 inches in depth.
2. Fill bottom 2 inches with loose soil. A good topsoil will work well.
3. Place bulb so the point is up and the roots are down. Fill with loose topsoil and tamp down the ground.
4. Water bulb thoroughly.
Note: Daylilies, Grasses, and Oriental Lilies will do better in sun. Also certain varieties of daylilies when mature are by nature small plants, such as Stella De Oro and Happy Returns.
IMPORTANT
Bare root plants are an economical way of purchasing perennials, however they do require some care in the first year.
Perennials should be watered during any dry period. (7 days or more without rain). This is very important!!
Do not fertilize in the first 3 months after planting. After this time frame any good water soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow will work well.
